Marquee lights obsession

I loves me some marquee lights!

Even more than marquee lights, I’ve got a thing for &.

(Yes, I have started a slight ampersand collection…)

I decided I needed a remote-controlled, battery-operated marquee ampersand above my kitchen cupboards. (Didn’t want wires or plugs showing & being 12+ feet from the floor, the ability to turn on remotely was a must.)

Couldn’t find one. Even if I found one, I’m sure that would be more $$ than I could justify spending.

So, I bought a papier-mâché one from my favorite Joann store.http://www.joann.com/paper-mache-letter-ampersand-symbol-12-x-1.5-inch/13334115.html#start=5

I carefully removed the top with a craft knife.

…and it sat like that for months while I looked for components to complete my project!

After I decided on my lights, it was time to paint. I wanted my & to look weathered & rusty. I used Mod Podge to give it a sheen as if it were painted metal.ElisabethJean marquee ampersand (2) I used white tape to bundle the little lights by twos, and small ornaments for the “globes”.ElisabethJean marquee ampersand (8)

Unfortunately, I found a replacement & while waiting for this project to be complete…ElisabethJean marquee ampersand (10)

Joyeux Noël

NowelMy word last Christmas was “JOY”. noel
This year, I found “NOEL” and decided to study up on it. And I’m glad I did, because Monday when our exterminator stopped by he asked what that word meant.noel2Some researchers claim the word Noel simply means a Christmas song and that it dates from the early 19th century. noel3A few state that it originated centuries before the French used it. noel4Some say that Noel means “good news”. noel5My favorite explanation (and the one I shared with my bug guy) asserts that “NO-” comes from the Latin natalis which means “birth,” and “-EL” of course, is Hebrew for God. Thus, to me, Noel celebrates the birth of God.

Like last year, we visited our friends’ church to hear their Christmas concert.noel6
And again, as I was leaving the church, God brought me “my word” as He did last December. noel7
May you be blessed this season as we celebrate His birth.

Mrs. Butterworth® gets her wings

A few years ago my mom gave me an old syrup bottle.mrsBOf course she started living in the kitchen. (The bottle, not my mom…)mrsB1
Struck with a “stroke of genius” I rescued the heart insert from an old spring-form pan and rusted it.
Attached with wire, and in the right light, Mrs. B looks like an angel.
She tried to fit in with the other angels atop the old telephone table; but the space was a bit cramped...
She thought she might try the angel tree in the front room; but realized without a light of her own, she was outshone by some of the others.

mrsB3…but she looks marvelous living in my kitchen.

(I believe I will show Mrs. B off over at NewlyWoodwards for Dare to Deck the Halls linky party.)

Reaching for JOY

My word for 2014 came to me in early December. It was brought to me by my Aunt Margaret.joyteaActually, I had first bumped into it when my friend Sara gave me a tea light holder that she didn’t need. (Of course I needed it because it was blue!)joyfixThen one day as I was working on an outdoor décor project, Aunt Margaret came over for a little visit. She saw my sign and shared with me a sweet story:joyAuntMThe following weekend my heart was gripped by some homeless folk downtown where we sang on a Sunday afternoon; and were so blessed to be privileged to distribute warm clothing.joyhomelessWe were singing “Joy to the World” and a man just off to the left of this picture was holding up his lit lighter…joyACCThat evening Keith & I attended a beautiful Christmas concert that a friend was directing at his church. As we were leaving I saw my word tucked into a little corner.

reach for joy

My prayer for you this coming year is that you will reach for the joy. That you will be able to see beyond the pain of cancer, the frustration of separation, the discomfort of circumstance… and reach for JOY.

Monopoly®-izing the family room

The long-awaited day has come. Today is the “reveal” for those of us participating in Erin’s brainchild: the Random Acts of Craftiness (henceforth referred to as RAoC) challenge. (I previously referred to this activity in a post sometime last month…)

The beneficiary of this RAoC in my home was this lonely, little table lamp. (There’s a back-story as to why it was procured last year from the thrift store, but I won’t bore you with details.)

It somewhat straddles the demarcation between breakfast nook & family room.

It’s not imposing enough to really anchor that end of the sectional which is our only seating in said family room.

Enter Erin & her tossed gauntlet: what can you make/remake by upcycling an old board game?

This does play into our decorating scheme for that room. Above a portion of the sectional is this statement:So, Erin & all your RAoC participants – GAME ON! It will be so much fun to play this edition with you! I foresee a decor improvement on our horizon…

Now, when my guys play Monopoly®, this is what it looks like:DSCN5109

…but I wanted my lamp to portray the more classic version of the game. I scoured an antique mall, frequented thrift shops, even went Goodwill hunting… I gotta tell you – I refuse to pay what some of those vendors believed their used merchandise to be worth!

Fortunately, there was the internet. Equally as fortunate is the lovely shopping experience which is Etsy. And most fortuitous, there is Judy Ashman’s shop, Vintage Paper Works!DSCN4982

S-C-O-R-E!

So, I took my little green wooden houses & big red wooden hotels and the hubs' big cordless drill and went to work. (*insert woodworking skill or lack thereof disclaimer here*)bead

Next, I used the router to faux-age the buildings; then I “strung” my beads on a length of chain.strung

I stitched the chain to the bottom of the lamp shade.stitch

While taking time off to stop the blood from flowing from the needle pricks  During breaks from old shoulder fatigue  In between stints of stitching, I E-6000®-ed the tokens to the lamp base utilizing a template to ensure equitable spacing.DSCN5032

I waffled between three or four possibilities for using Monopoly® money on the shade. Originally I had planned to stitch it on the fabric I’d cut to cover the shade. But I wasn’t wanting a ruffle-y look. Thought about découpage, but that felt like too much work & too much clean-up.

In the end we determined our solution would be to print scanned images of the money onto iron-on transfer paper. (I was hoping it would bring more of a translucency to the shade when illuminated.)money

I really wanted to place the money in a way that would account for the curve in the shade, but that would’ve used up a lot more of that expensive transfer paper than I was willing to part with. Oh! And did you see the section that I accidently ironed on upside-down? PSHHHHHH!

The top & bottom trims from the original shade had come off during all the maneuvering – so I painted them black & reused them.paint

Have you stuck with me thus far? Are you ready for the reveal?

Drumroll, please.

Curtains up!

TA-DA!

You really need to go to His and Hers to see what other crafty people have done with their game pieces.

I really should be stitching, but...

bff (blog funny friend) Erin is up to no some good. Good, clean (I hope) fun, that is.
I can't wait to find out what the first challenge item is! We'll have basically a month to plan, create, construct our original project utilizing the chosen article.

Erin had teased* us with the statement that used toothbrushes might be first up...

Bring it!
I'm ready!

(*that theory has now been debunked -- back to the drawing board...)

Things I'm loving...

My life this week was spent rearranging some furniture . . .
sewing a costume . . .
buying a jacket for an important interview . . .
buying & installing coat hooks . . .
watching a sunrise . . .
yelling at a game . . .
loving me some boys!

Thanks, Paisley Jade, for again reminding us that you "wholeheartedly believe that no matter what is happening in your life, there is always something that you can be thankful for... no matter how simple it is."
